"I often think about how different my own life would have been without music. It gave me opportunities I could never have imagined growing up on a council estate in Leeds. It gave me confidence, purpose, a sense of belonging, and a way of expressing things that words alone could never fully capture. That experience is why I believe so deeply in the power of music and the arts.

The arts are not a luxury. They are fundamental to what it means to be human. They help us make sense of ourselves, connect with others, imagine different futures, and find meaning in the world around us. It is no coincidence that organisations such as UNESCO and the OECD recognise culture, creativity and artistic expression as central to human flourishing and societal wellbeing.

For me, one of the greatest responsibilities we have as a society is ensuring that every child and young person has the opportunity to experience that transformative power. Yet too often access to music and the arts remains shaped by background, geography, income and circumstance. Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.

The challenge before us is not simply to widen access, but to reshape the systems that determine who gets to participate, belong and succeed. My life's work has been driven by a simple belief... that creativity, talent and potential exist in every community, and that together we can build a future in which every young person has the chance not only to access the arts, but to flourish through them"
